Getting around

The Vila Emona is located in a peaceful suburb, but all major city attractions as well as Ljubljanica river are at your door step. You have only 10 meters to the nearest bus station, 500 meters to the center, 5 minuts walk to the Old City and 20 minutes walk to the green Tivoli Park. In the direct neighborhood you have a green park with a playground by the river Gradaščica. It is very pleasant place to be in the summer.

 

The Old Town is Ljubljana’s medieval area between the river and the castle. The Old Town is just around the cornet with many good restaurants with delicious food. You can have a pleasant walk to the famous Three Bridge Square and the Open market or you simply walk to the castle and enjoy the view.

 

A lot of Ljubljana’s cultural day and night activities happen around the city centre, particularly the area around Preseren Square. Apart from bars and restaurants, you will also find lots of museums and art galleries in Ljubljana’s city center.

HISTORY OF LJUBLJANA

The development of Ljubljana dates back to Roman times, where the fortified Roman settlement laid on the area of today’s Ljubljana. Roman name for Ljubljana was Emona.

After Emona was destroyed by Huns, Slavs had arrived and built a town under the present castle hill, that developed into medieval Ljubljana (known as Laibach).

It was under the Habsburg rule until the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1918 and part of Yugoslavia until 1991.

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, which itself is a member of the European Union. The population of Slovenia is approximately 2 million, while the population of Ljubljana is about 300.000. Therefore, they rank among the smallest countries and capitals of the EU. However, we do dare to add, they also rank among the most beautiful and among the safest of them all.

WHERE TO BUY THE URBANA CARD

You can buy your Urbana card at any of the Urbana machines, which are mostly located in the immediate vicinity of bus stops, at kiosks and newsagents’, at selected petrol stations and post offices, in several Mercator and Spar shopping centers, at the LPP Passenger Centre on 56 Slovenska Cesta in Ljubljana, at the Ljubljana bus station on 4 Trg OF, at the two tourist information centers, on  10 Krekov Trg and 2 Adamic-Lundrovo Nabrezje, as well as at any place with the Urbana logo (red circle inscribed with Urbana).

WHERE AND WHEN CAN I PICK UP MY LJUBLJANA TOURIST CARD?

You can pick up your Ljubljana Tourist Card at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport or at the Tourist Information Centre (TIC). Select your pickup location when purchasing the card online.

The pickup point at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is the tourist information center in the Arrivals hall.

I ONLY HAVE ONE DAY IN THE CITY, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Ljubljana may be the quaintest capital in the world and one of the smallest in Europe, but there’s so much to see, do, eat, drink, buy and experience that any stay less than three days is just cheating yourself.

I CAN’T BUY ALCOHOL AFTER 9PM?

No, you can’t buy any type of alcohol in any Slovenian shops after 9PM. You also can’t buy anything stronger than beer or wine in cafés and bars before 10AM.
